Sixth Form College Hosts Unforgettable ASPIRE Awards Evening
The City of Stoke-on-Trent Sixth Form College proudly hosted its largest-ever ASPIRE Awards Evening on Wednesday, 9th April 2025, at the iconic King’s Hall in Stoke-on-Trent. This year’s event recognised the achievements of over 125 students across a variety of categories, including Higher Education and Employer Awards, making it the college’s most extensive celebration to date.
A highlight of the college calendar, the ASPIRE Awards Evening celebrates student success while reflecting the college’s core values: Achievement, Skills, Participation, Independence, Resilience, and Endeavour.
The College was delighted to welcome Commander Nathan Gray as guest speaker. Originally from Stoke-on-Trent and a former student of the College, Commander Gray has forged a distinguished career as a Royal Navy test pilot. He was the first British pilot to land an F-35B Lightning jet on HMS Queen Elizabeth. His powerful address, drawing on his experiences in aviation, leadership, and resilience, offered an inspiring message to students and guests alike.
The evening’s most prestigious accolade — the Principal’s Award for A Level Student of the Year — was presented to second-year student James Davies. James was recognised for his outstanding commitment to the Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, alongside studying four A Levels and completing an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ). He will soon attend a celebration at Buckingham Palace in recognition of his achievement. James said,
Completing my Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, alongside four A Levels and an EPQ, has been a rewarding journey that’s helped me grow both as a leader and as an individual. I’m truly honoured to receive this award.
First-year student Skye-Rose Mellor received the ASPIRE Independence Award in GCSE Business. Skye was commended for her strong work ethic and her ability to balance academic study with her passion for nail art. Skye-Rose commented,
This award has given me a huge confidence boost and motivates me to keep striving for success. It’s incredible to be recognised for working hard and making progress.
Second-year student Tharuki Dulanma was awarded the ASPIRE Endeavour Award in Further Mathematics. Since arriving in the UK, Tharuki has embraced new challenges and made significant academic progress. Tharuki shared,
Studying Further Maths requires real dedication, and this award shows that hard work pays off. I’m incredibly grateful for the support and guidance of my teachers.
William Astley, a second-year student studying A Level Dance, received the ASPIRE Respect Award in recognition of his leadership and passion for performance. His talent has earned him offers from two of the UK’s top conservatoires — Urdang and Italia Conti. William said,
Dance is my passion, and I’m so thankful for the opportunities I’ve had at Sixth Form. I’m excited to take the next step at a top conservatoire.
College Principal Lesley Morrey praised the students’ outstanding achievements:
The ASPIRE Awards Evening is a truly special occasion which celebrates not only our students’ academic and personal successes, but also the values that define our college — ambition, resilience, and community. We are incredibly proud of everything our students have achieved, and grateful to our staff, families, partners, and Potteries Educational Trust colleagues for the vital role they play in supporting our young people. The awards evening is a testament to the talent, dedication, and spirit that thrives within our college community.
The ASPIRE Awards Evening 2025 was a powerful showcase of talent, commitment, and aspiration. The College extends its sincere thanks to all sponsors and partners who supported the event and helped create a memorable evening for students, families, and staff alike.
