On Target: Nicole Claims Junior National Archery Crown

The City of Stoke-on-Trent Sixth Form College is proud of first-year student Nicole Latos, who recently showcased her exceptional talent at the National and Junior National Archery Championships, achieving remarkable results and securing the title of Junior National Champion.

The event, held at Stoneleigh Park, began with the senior Nationals. Despite arriving during rush hour and having limited preparation time, Nicole approached her session with positivity. Her performance placed her 13th after three sessions, an impressive achievement amidst tough competition.

In the head-to-head rounds, Nicole secured a 6-4 victory before competing against another component who claimed the win, Nicole reflected on the experience:

It was an amazing experience where I managed to gain 3 points. I was super happy with how the match went and was amazed.

Nicole returned to Stoneleigh Park 2 days later for the Junior Nationals, delivering an outstanding performance. Starting her session with three perfect 30s in a row, she achieved an incredible personal best, surpassing her previous record by 11 points. Her final score, which included 11 perfect 30s and only 16 points dropped across the competition, secured her the title of Junior National Champion.  Nicole said:

This score was amazing and surely one to be happy and proud of. This put me at Junior National Champion.

Among all junior competitors, Nicole’s score was the second highest, with only one competitor achieving a higher score.

Nicole is currently studying BTEC Sports Coaching and Development Extended Diploma and is also part of the College’s Elite Scholarship Programme, where she works hard to balance her athletic and academic pursuits.

The programme provides vital support and resources for elite-level athletes, enabling them to continue their training and athletic development while excelling academically. Open to all students at the College, the programme requires participants to compete at a minimum of county standard or equivalent in any sport, regardless of their area of study.

David Hardwick, Health, Wellbeing and Sport Coordinator at the College, praised Nicole’s dedication and success:

We are incredibly proud of Nicole’s achievements. Her hard work, determination, and sportsmanship are an inspiration to all of us. She is a fantastic role model for our students, and this win is a testament to her commitment to excellence.
