Course Overview

Applied Human Biology forms the foundation of the Health and Science sectors.

This course provides the opportunity for progression into Nursing, Midwifery, Allied Health and Sciences including Life Sciences, Clinical Biomedical Sciences and Physiological Sciences.

BTEC Extended Certificate (equivalent to 1 A-Level)

Course Topics

Everyone taking this qualification will study three mandatory units, covering the following content areas:

Unit 1: Principles of Applied Human Biology including cells, tissues and biological molecules, body systems, immune response, genetics and health.
Unit 2: Practical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases
Unit 3: Human Biology and Health Issues. The mandatory content allows learners to concentrate on the development of their knowledge and understanding as well as essential practical and research skills relevant in applied human biology and health science areas, over an extended period. Learners will also do one optional unit,
Unit 4: Functional Physiology, which has been designed to support progression to applied human biology, health and health science courses in higher education.

Course Features

The BTEC Applied Human Biology course offers an alternative to studying A Level Biology.

The course contains less Maths and Chemistry content than the A Level Biology course.
The course only covers Human Biology topics; there are no Plant Biology or Ecology based topics
The BTEC Applied Human Biology course offers an alternative to students who have an interest in studying Biology as their only science subject; the BTEC Applied Human Biology offers a part coursework /part exam based alternative

Where Courses Become Careers

The qualification is recognised by higher education providers as contributing to admission requirements of many relevant applied human biology/health science courses.
When combined with other relevant qualifications, learners can progress onto further study at higher education. Examples include:

If combined with Health and Social Care BTEC you could progress onto Occupational Health, Nursing or Midwifery
If combined with BTEC Sport you could progress onto Sport Science
If combined with A Levels in Psychology and Sociology, for example, you could progress onto Nursing.

GCSE

Students who have not yet taken their GCSE and those who did not gain at least a grade 5 at high school are best suited to this one year course. In addition students who already have a grade 5 but need a higher grade can take this course on the Higher Tier in order to achieve a higher grade.

Maths is all about solving puzzles and spotting patterns. It is the key to unlock a wealth of other sciences such as Chemistry and Physics. And there would be no computers at all in the world without maths. Taking your knowledge from GCSE Higher maths and expanding it into more complex and fascinating fields you will also study mechanics – how can predict the movement of objects acting under various forces – and statistics – how can we use data that we have observed to predict what may happen in the future?

Are you looking for a science course that focuses more on vocational skills than A levels, that will help you into skilled employment as a laboratory technician, higher study or apprenticeships? A science course which includes an in-depth industry placement in the science sector? Yes? Then the T level in Laboratory Sciences is the course for you.

Transition

The T Level Transition Programme (Digital) is a new type of 16 to 19 study programme designed to develop the skills, experience, knowledge and behaviours to support successful progression onto a T Level in either Digital: Software Development, Infrastructure or Support Services.

T level

This is a two year course which has been developed in collaboration with employers and businesses to ensure that the content meets the needs of the digital industry and prepares students for work. It is a level 3 qualification equivalent to 3 A Levels. More than 200 businesses, including Fujitsu have helped design the course content to make sure young people taking T Levels are equipped with the knowledge and skills that employer’s value.

If you love creating, problem solving and working with digital hardware then this is the course for you! This course will provide learners with the knowledge, skills and behaviours needed to progress into skilled employment, higher-level technical training or higher education study in the digital sector.

Computer Science

A Level

Interested in what makes computers tick? Want an introduction to computing? If you like solving problems and you can think logically then Computer Science is the subject for you. You are given the opportunity to study current computer applications; high level language programming and systems analysis and design. Computing combines well with all Sciences, Mathematics, Product Design, Interactive Media and many other subjects.

Chemistry

A Level

Sometimes referred to as the ‘central science’, Chemistry helps to connect physical sciences, like Maths and Physics, with applied sciences, such as Biology, Medicine and Engineering. In fact, Chemistry is all around us and an understanding of the subject can help to answer many simple questions about everyday life. Chemistry is one of the Russell Group universities’ ‘facilitating’ subjects — so called because choosing them at A-level allows a wide range of options for degree study. An A-level in Chemistry is required for most medicine, dentistry, and vet courses.
